This exhibition at the meeting room of the Sargent Memorial Library will be held from 1/15/2012 through 3/2/2012. It is being put on by the Chinese Brush Painting Group, which will also present a Chinese Brush painting workshop on 2/18/2012 from 1:00pm to 2:30pm at the library including a brief Chinese brush painting overview and demonstration. These events are free and everyone is welcome.
The Chinese Brush Painting group in Acton-Boxborough was established in spring 2010. This group of mothers, who love to do Chinese brush paintings and studied with Professor Yifang Guo (郭义芳) at the Acton Chinese Language School (ACLS), meets monthly to share their painting skills and knowledge.
The main themes of Chinese painting are landscape (山水 "mountains and rivers"), birds and flowers (花鳥), and figure painting (人物畫). This exhibition focuses on the birds and flowers category (花鳥); some of these paintings were inspired by works by Zhan Xu (徐湛), ManHeng Liu (刘满衡), and Baishi Qi (齐白石). The exhibiting painters are Jianli Larson, Qin Guo, Yaping Ren, Julie Zhu and Ann Chen.
Jianli Larson spent 7 years in Japan studying Japanese literature, before moving to the United States 20 years ago. She resides in Boxborough with her family. Her son is in college while her daughter attends AB Regional High School. In addition to her love of Chinese painting, she is an avid gardener and accomplished frame artist.
Qin Guo is a 9-year resident of Boxborough who also spent 7 years in Japan previously. Qin studied Electrical Engineering in college. She has two sons, one in college and one at ABRHS. Her passions include painting, writing essays about daily life, photography and cooking.
Yaping Ren has lived in Acton for over 10 years. She majored in Forest Biology and Computer Science in college, now works as a Sr. software QA engineer for Cisco in Boxborough Site. She has two sons. She loves to paint in different media, and enjoys writing.
Julie Zhu lives in Acton since 2006. She is a faculty member at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester. She is married with two daughters, one at Gates School, the other at RJ Grey Junior High School. Her hobbies include painting and gardening.
Ann Chen has resided in Acton since 1981. Ann just retired as a global manager from Intel. She graduated from the MIT Sloan School Executive Program of Business Management, and holds Master’s degrees in Computer Science and Social Work. Her honors include numerous corporation awards, Maurice Falk Fellow, Who’s Who in the Media and Communications, and Who’s Who in America. Ann loves painting, travel and classical music.
